enter Bistro Blackwood recently launched a new Apéro Hour and it's right up our alley! Blackwood is Jock Zonfrillo’s lively bistro located in the east end of Adelaide’s CBD, and the sibling of Restaurant Orana. This was our first visit to Blackwood and we were excited to try some dishes and sip on some fine beverages.
We started on our favourite Aperol Spritz and yes, ok we had more than one. I mean who can resist, right? For those who love their wines the selection of Hersey 'Harold Hersey' Rosé (Adelaide Hills SA), Massena Fruit Salad Field Blend (Eden Valley SA) and Karatta 'Chinaman's Trek' Pinot Noir (Robe SA) are available.
During the Apéro Hour you can have Fire-pit Roasted Red Capsicum with sherry vinegar & herb flowers, Shoe-string Fries for $5.00 or for $2.00 (each) Freshly Shucked Coffin Bay Oysters with mild habanero & lemon vinaigrette.
The Fire-pit Roasted Red Capsicum was one of those dips that we just wanted more and more of. Yes we unashamedly scraped every bit even after we finished our bread. This dip had many elements that made it simply divine. The crispy saltbush added a crunchy feel while the sour cream and hummus gave it a lovely creamy texture.
The Freshly Shucked Oysters are just that - fresh! Quality oysters with that fresh saltiness from the ocean. The lemon vinaigrette was refreshing but we did expect a bit more of a spicy kick from the habanero even though it was only mild.
After the Apéro Hour we stayed on for some dinner and ordered the Fire-pit Smoked Pumpkin with rainbow chard, saltbush and macadamia and the South Australian Mulloway with malt and ginger glaze and organic vegetables.
The dish of the night for us was the Fire-pit Smoked Pumpkin. This dish is full of flavour. The fire pit gave the pumpkin a subtle smokey flavour while the sherry vinegar and herb flowers added a sweetness. For a crunchy texture the salt and vinegar saltbush was roasted while the pumpkin was soft and velvety making it simply divine! Oh and this is a vegan friendly dish so everyone can have this delight!
The South Australian Mulloway was also another winner. Cooked over the fire the fish was so succulent that it melted in your mouth while the malt and ginger gave it a sweet and zesty flavour. A simple yet tasty dish.
Our visit to Bistro Blackwood was an impressive experience. The food was excellent, the spritz's were of high quality and the service was faultless. We must mention the staff as this added to the experience. They were attentive and knowledgeable and took the time to wait on every need and answered each of our questions with such professionalism. Well done to all at Bistro Blackwood - we loved it and have already started spreading the word!
