The Colonist at Norwood is one of those pubs that has a great reputation without all the fanfare. When we told people we were invited to try their new menu there were lots of "I go there all the time" to "I love that pub". We have had dinner there before and eaten some great pub food so we were excited to see what the new menu was about!
Due to demand from regular patrons Head Chef Dean Lennerth has focused on all day brunch menu as well as classic pub favourites. “The demand for an all day breakfast rings true with our weekend trade, so we have decided to extend the concept through to a seven-day brunch offering. People will be able to choose from our signature pub classics but also have the choice of indulging in a brunch dish until 4pm daily,” says Head Chef, Dean Lennerth.
With an emphasis on local produce and a menu designed for meat, vegetarian and vegan lovers as well as for gluten free or other dietary requirement customers - there is something to please everyone. We started with Pulled Pork Huevos Rancheros- a tortilla filled corn salsa, melted feta, pulled pork, beans, two free range gooey fried eggs & chives topped with hot sauce. This dish was full of typical Mexican flavours making it one of our favourites. The combination of spicy and sweet flavours together with the tender pulled pork complimented the fried eggs and chargrilled bean mix scattered in the dish. We were told that you can order a side dish of guacamole to add to the wow factor!
The Potato Rosti with roasted garlic & chive comes with a chilli & chorizo onion jam, crispy Hahndorf bacon, fried free range eggs and with a white wine cream sauce. This is the perfect hangover dish. You have the carbs from the crispy potato and bacon with some punchy chilli flavours that will cure you in no time! The creamy white wine sauce was a nice touch matching well with the crispy bacon.
For a more healthy option and for the vegetarian and gluten free customers we tried the Smashed Avocado and Haloumi served on a toasted sourdough bun with roasted cherry tomatoes and a mix of toasted seeds. The haloumi was perfectly cooked. It had that perfect texture of crispy golden outer and slightly melted in the middle. The toasted seeds added a nice crunch with each bite and blended well with the creamy avocado.
Another one of our favourites were the Nachos with warm frijoles, corn chips, melted cheese, tomato & capsicum salsa, guacamole and sour cream. There was no skimping on ingredients here with generous amounts of guacamole and sour cream which won us over! The highlight was the tomato and capsicum salsa which had a lovely sweet tang that just made these nachos a winner.
The surprise dish of the day were the Wedges. Now these are no ordinary wedges. Besides the wedges being hand cut they are served with pulled lamb shoulder along with sour cream and a spicy tomato relish topped with fresh chives. The lamb was so tender and added a hearty, meaty element to your standard wedges dish. The spicy tomato relish was another winner with a lovely spicy kick.
The last dish we tried was the Chicken and Haloumi Salad. Another gluten free option with roasted baby carrots, char-grilled chicken breast, grilled haloumi, quinoa, red onion, beetroot, fresh herbs and salad greens topped with toasted seeds and a lemon tahini. This well thought out salad offers a great healthy option along with tasty roasted baby carrots, sweet beetroot and a lovely smokey flavour of the chicken. Lots of veggie flavours and crunchy textures from the seeds adds to the attraction of this salad.
It's not often you are impressed with all the dishes you get to taste from a menu but on this occasion we were impressed, surprised and excited. We like our pubs and we do have our favourites and we have just added The Colonist to our list. We can safely say to all our friends that gave us such wonderful compliments before we ate here the overall stamp of approval. They were right to say "I love that pub" and yes, the food is amazing also!
