It’s Mushroom Month at the Highway

It's July which means it's Mushroom Month at The Highway Hotel. This popular culinary event is back with a new menu full of tasty mushroom flavoured dishes and Tempting Palates had a preview of what's in store this month.

We started with the Swiss Brown and Porcini Mushroom Soup. This hearty soup is the perfect antidote for a cold Winter's day. The lovely strong mushroom flavours and crispy Enoki on top will satisfy your palate leaving you wanting more!

The next Entree served was the Oyster Mushroom, Shemeji and Foie Gras Terrine with celeriac puree and basil oil. With so many flavours and textures this terrine was such a delight to eat. The strip of salty bacon surrounding the carefully structured slice of terrine complimented the mushroom flavours well. We certainly devoured this dish.

For Mains we started with the Brie Stuffed Portobello Burger with charred vegetable relish, Egmont, butter lettuce on a Brioche Bun served with Onion Rings. We love onion rings and thought it a nice touch instead of fries or chips. The burger was tasty and it came very close to being the best Vegetarian burger we've had this year. The relish was so tangy and had a subtle spiciness to it while the brie and portobello mushroom was a perfect match. Making this (huge) burger one tummy filling meal.

The Pan Fried Gnocchi with garlic field mushrooms, king browns, burnt butter sage sauce and crispy Enoki mushrooms. The gnocchi were soft and fluffy on the inside while the outside was crispy. The mushroom flavours are strong but compliment the burnt butter sage sauce really well.

The last Main was the 200g Truffle Infused Beef Eye Fillet with duxelle mushroms and taleggio cannelloni with juniper glaze. This was another strong flavoured mushroom dish and it was the feature dish of the night. The fillet was cooked perfectly and the juniper glaze added a lovely sweetness balancing the flavours of the mushrooms.

Lastly for dessert we had the Porcini, Coffee and Chocolate Parfait with chocolate soil and peanut praline. What can you say about coffee and chocolate? Together they are irresistible and adding the porcini mushroom gives it another element. Another delightful dessert that finished off the mushroom menu with a sweet bang!
