You can't really call The Store in Melbourne St new considering it's been around since 1997 but what you can say is new life has been given to this iconic North Adelaide establishment. Tempting Palates was invited to try out some new menu items and some classic all day brunch dishes.
In its glory days The Store was pumping and you had to get in early to get a table until a change of ownership saw patronage slow down. In 2012 Owner Sam Dunning took over and since then the glory days have been back! He's brought this place back to basics with a modern twist, listened to what the customers wanted and that has been the winning combination! The menu is a good mix of wholesome good food for the health conscious and also pleasing those who've had a big night out and want a hangover cure in the morning!
It was a full out the day we went for brunch and it continued on that way until we left after lunch. That's a sign of a good place to eat! We started with the Coconut and Chia Pudding and the Quinoa Fruit Salad. Both fruity, healthy and a great way to start the day. The Coconut and Chia Pudding with berry compote and roasted nuts had a blast of natural sweetness with so many textures - firm strawberries, soft blueberries popping in your mouth to the crunchiness of the roasted nuts. Best of all it's dairy free, gluten free, vegetarian and can also be made vegan!
The Quinoa Fruit Salad with blueberries, strawberries, banana and a honey and lime dressing is a simple dish with fresh fruit flavours. The subtle hints of the honey and lemon dressing blends with the fruit nicely while the quinoa adds a nice twist to the fruit salad. Served with a Mixed Berries Smoothie makes it a perfect meal!
Our next dish was, well how shall we describe it? Epic would be a good word. "The Store" Club Sandwich was the biggest Club we've seen and it's certainly the best way to cure a hangover or a big night out on the drink. This sandwich has grilled chicken, bacon, tomato, lettuce, avocado, fried egg, aioli and dijon mustard with a serve of chips. This is one big messy eat and we loved it!
The Sliders with Chips was next. Two sliders - Pulled Pork with coleslaw and the other Southern Fried Chicken with lettuce, caramelised onion and BBQ sauce. The sliders were tasty and the pork and chicken fillings were very generous servings. The Stores's sliders are slightly larger than the kind you find at other places so you don't have to worry about still being hungry after!
Everyone loves a Smashed Avocado and this one was served on rye with salmon, Danish feta, rocket and fresh lime. We loved the fresh, light flavours and it was nice to taste a good quality feta. The avocado and feta gave this dish a lovely creamy texture and the lime gave it a lovely tangy flavour. You can also order this with bacon or eggs.
Our last dish was the house made Buttermilk Pancakes served with cream and maple syrup. We have to say these are the best tasting pancakes we've had in Adelaide in a long time. The mixture is made fresh every morning and is available until sold out. The Stores pancakes are thicker than your normal pancakes, but don't let that deter you. They were light and fluffy and it was impossible to leave a crumb left on the plate. We are still dreaming of them now!
The Store have introduced a Happy Hour between 11:00am - 1:00pm (ok, it's happy hours!) and we tried the delicious Espresso Martini and the spicy Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was a perfect match for the "The Store" Club Sandwich and the Espresso Martini? Well, that's a perfect match for ANYTHING!
The Store is back to what it should be - serving their famous breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes and the faithful have returned. It may be busy but don't worry it's big enough to fit everyone. There's outdoor dining for those lovely summer or spring days and in the winter the inside dining area has a warm and cosy atmosphere.
