Fast food. Most people have a preconceived idea about it but there is a better choice if you still want fast food without feeling guilty. Oporto is for Fast Foodies! Tempting Palates was invited to the new menu launch and we tried a few of the new menu items as well as the popular and best selling Bondi Burger.
Oporto was started by Antonio Cerqueria who opened his first store in North Bondi. His Portuguese inspired chilli sauce was a big hit with customers and that was the beginning of his flavoursome grilled chicken burgers. That one store has now turned into over 140 stores all over Australia and New Zealand.
What's the difference between Oporto's and other fast food outlets? Well, we had a behind the scenes tour of the kitchen of the Pultney St store hosted by State Manager Hayley Brown. "Our main point of difference is our sauces. Whether it's our legendary Chilli sauce to the Prego or the Lemon and Herb sauce; they all stand out from the rest." She also explained the Oporto's approach in the kitchen "It's important that we source our produce locally. Everything is prepared fresh and ready made to order. Nothing is pre-made or frozen. There are no microwaves in our kitchens!". After touring the kitchen we can confirm that the chicken was cooked on the grill fresh in a free flowing cooking style and there were no microwaves insight!
Some of the new menu items are the Lemon and Herb Marinated Chicken Strips, Portuguese Tomato Salad, the Jalapeno Bites, Grilled Pita with Garlic Dip and Spicy Chicken Embrulho which is a wrap. Although we didn't get to try all items, Oporto's have brought back their Flame Grilled Chicken brush-basted with your choice of Chilli or Lemon & Herb sauce. We just may have to go back for another visit.
We ordered the Bondi Burger and we must say it was tasty! The Spicy Chicken Embrullho and the Marinated Chicken Strips were also good while the Jalepeno Bites weren't as hot as we expected - a relief to some!!! The night ended with Churros served with Chocolate Dipping sauce and icing sugar. We love Churros but who doesn't?
Oporto's has designed their menu for Fast Foodies. With having their 30th anniversary this past July it certainly has passed the test of time. If you want fast but freshly made fast food, Oporto's is the place for you.
