Do you want a nice relaxing place where you can eat in peace or chat to your friends without the hustle and bustle? Ok, we have found the perfect place - Jamaica Blue, The Myer Centre Adelaide 22 Rundle Mall Adelaide. Tempting Palates was invited to try out some of the menu items and we were fans instantly!
We sat down with franchise owner Mona Lamshed to get the story behind why she chose a Jamaica Blue Cafe business for her first venture as an owner. Mona is originally from the town of Maidenhead, England where her parents ran a very popular restaurant for many years. So having grown up around restaurants and bars, hospitality was in her blood! When she was in her late teens, Mona decided to travel the world which took her to many places around Europe. Eventually she settled in the South of France working in the yachting industry for 9 years and meeting her future husband - an Australian man!
Having worked in a few places around Adelaide including the Convention Centre, Mona decided it was time to take the plunge and own her own Cafe. Jamaica Blue was the perfect fit. The menu at Jamaica Blue is filled with many healthy and tasty options. With such a large selection of breakfast and lunch dishes, it was hard to choose but we finally decided on the Avocado Smash and Maple Bacon, the Vintage Ground Beef Burger, the Open Scotch Fillet Sandwich and side orders of Sweet Potato Wedges and a Bowl of Chips.
For a breakfast dish the Avocado Smash and Maple Bacon is simply delicious. With tomato, coriander and lemon on toast, maple bacon and a poached egg your taste buds will be dancing. There's a combination of savoury and sweet that balances so well while the avocado, tomato and onion give it a slight South American flavour. The poached egg was cooked perfectly and the bacon was crispy and tasty.
We couldn't go past a burger and the Vintage Ground Beef Burger lived up to our expectations. Consisting of bacon, cheddar cheese, pickle, aioli, rocket, tomato and red onion on a brioche bun. Our preference for a good burger is a soft bun and this one didn't disappoint. The ingredients were fresh and crispy. The beef patty was cooked just right to be juicy and flavoursome and the aioli along with the pickled onion gave this burger a lovely tang. We highly recommend this burger.
By Mona's recommendation we tried the Open Scotch Fillet Sandwich with bacon, caramelised onion, cheddar cheese, pickle, rocket, tomato and paprika aioli on toast. This is a classic steak sandwich but with so much more! The steak was perfectly cooked and so tender. The caramelised onion had a lovely sweetness and with melted cheddar cheese this sandwich was delicious. Another impressive dish.
The sides of Sweet Potatoes and Bowl of Chips were a good accompaniment for the burger and steak sandwich. The servings were generous and our favourite were the sweet potato chips. So crispy, sweet and flavoursome.
The strong focus on quality and customer service is evident. Owner Mona together with her staff at the Myer Centre Jamaica Blue provide a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere making it such a pleasant dining experience. With such hustle and bustle in Rundle Mall, it's nice to know that there's a place you can go to and have a bite to eat, have a coffee or meet a friend for lunch to simply relax before getting back to the daily work grind. Next time we are catching with a friend for lunch in the city - Jamaica Blue will be on our list!
