Tempting Palates was invited to dine at the newest Italian restaurant in Norwood, Nonna and I at 1a Margaret Street. The first thing we noticed was how intimate and cosy it was. Head Chef and owner Chef Khalil Rashwan was our gracious host and we were in for a fun filled, flavoursome night of Italian food. His motto is "Come hungry, leave happy" and we certainly did!
Having been influenced by his Italian Nonna, it was inevitable that Italian food would be Chef Khalil's passion. At Nonna and I it's traditional Italian food with Khalil's touch. By sometimes creating dishes to suit each customer, he wants them to have their own individual experience at his restaurant. He has been known to talk to his customers and then get in the kitchen to whip up a dish especially for them that's not on the menu.
With such charisma and charm, you can't help but be mesmerised by Khalil's passion and entertaining storytelling. He has worked in the United States, Europe and even had his own TV show in Malaysia before settling in Adelaide. Before opening Nonna and I he worked at popular restaurants such as Republic and The Paleo Cafe but the passion for Italian food and owning his own place was calling and too hard for him to resist.
For starters we had the Antipasto of Fresh Mozzarella Tomato served with Italian bread. There's nothing better than simple ingredients with big flavour. The mozzarella and tomato were fresh and topped off with a high quality balsamic vinegar!
For warm appertisers we had the Portobello Parmigiano - portobello mushroom seasoned with oregano, basil and roasted garlic with Napolitano sauce and mozzarella cheese. Another flavoursome dish with a delicious tomato sauce.
The next appetiser was the Steamed Vongole in olive oil, garlic and white wine sauce. This was one of our favourite dishes of the night.
For mains there was a choice of Chicken Prawns or Veal Prawns. Both dishes had a lovely creamy cognac sauce with roasted red capsicum and peas served on capellini pasta. Although both dishes were the same and well cooked, the veal won us over.
For dessert we had a choice of Creme Caramel or Tiramisu. Both desserts were of generous portions and true to Chef Khalil's individual mantra, each were cut and sliced in his own rustic style. The Creme Caramel was sweet and had a thick syrup which gave it a nice texture.
The Tiramisu was creamy and had a good strong coffee flavour. For any Tiramisu lover this one will delight you.
Nonna and I is a welcomed addition to the restaurant scene on the Parade. Chef Khalil has all the right ingredients to make it a great place for a family dinner. It's warm, cosy and inviting. There's even a take away pizza section - Pizza and I, for those who just want a casual night in. We enjoyed the experience at Nonna and I. How can you not when the host makes you smile, laugh and happy. We sure did come hungry and left happy...!
